Kadirli lies in Osmaniye Province in southern Turkey, at the northern edge of the Çukurova plain, where flat, intensively farmed lowland begins to rise toward the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. From above the town is compact, with a centre of dense blocks and streets that extend outward into orchards and fields, divided by canals and farm roads.
The site was settled in antiquity as Flaviopolis, a city of the Roman era, and traces of that past remain in the town. The surrounding plain is productive farmland, and Osmaniye Province is well known for its peanuts. The pattern of irrigated fields gives the edges of the map a precise, rectilinear texture that contrasts with the town's denser core.
A short distance away, the Karatepe-Aslantaş open-air museum preserves a late Hittite fortress whose inscriptions in Phoenician and Luwian helped scholars decipher Hieroglyphic Luwian.
