Braided Platte
South of town, the Platte splits into multiple channels and islands. Its tangled, braided form is the only organic shape against Kearney's straight lines.

Kearney Map Poster & Print
Kearney lies on the north bank of the Platte River in central Nebraska, on the historic route west across the plains. From above, it is a clean, generous grid of streets laid over flat land. Straight roads run to the compass points, and farmland lines up neatly beyond the edge of town.
The Platte runs south of the city as a wide, braided channel with sandbars and islands. Interstate 80 passes between the river and town. Just east, the Great Platte River Road Archway spans the highway. Each spring, sandhill cranes gather along this stretch of the river in huge numbers. The University of Nebraska at Kearney campus sits within the city grid.
A Kearney map poster shows the order of the Great Plains at its clearest: a disciplined grid, a railway and highway on the same east–west line, and a wandering river as the only irregular stroke. The contrast is simple and effective.

I-80 and the Archway
Interstate 80 runs east to west below the city. The Archway monument over the highway marks the pioneer trails that once followed the same valley.
University campus
The University of Nebraska at Kearney campus sits within the grid. Its larger buildings, lawns and curving paths break the regular pattern of city blocks.
