Kushinagar lies in the east of Uttar Pradesh, on the flat plain of the Ganges basin. It is one of the most important places in Buddhism: tradition holds that the Buddha passed into parinirvana here, and the town is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Temples built by communities from across Asia stand in the area around the historic sites.
