Loughton is on the northeastern edge of Greater London, just outside the capital's boundary in Essex. Its western side runs straight into Epping Forest, the ancient woodland that has shaped the town's character and limited its spread in that direction. To the east, the land drops towards the River Roding, and the Central line of the London Underground runs through the town with more than one station.
On the map, the forest is the dominant feature. A broad, empty mass of green presses against the western streets, and residential roads climb the higher ground towards it. The older high street runs through the middle of the town. Larger housing estates, including Debden, spread across the eastern side towards the river valley and the motorway beyond.

The Underground line runs through Loughton and on to its neighbours. Its track is a firm line across the composition, linking the town to London.
Roding valley
To the east the land falls towards the River Roding. The valley and the housing estates beside it give the lower half of the map a different, flatter texture.
