Lower Hutt Map Poster & Print
Lower Hutt fills the lower part of the Hutt Valley, north-east of Wellington. From above, the city is clearly shaped by its setting. Steep, forested hills rise on both sides, the Hutt River runs down the valley in a wide, stop-banked channel, and the streets spread across the flat valley floor until they meet Wellington Harbour at Petone.
Petone's foreshore was one of the first places settled by European colonists in the Wellington region, and today its beach looks across the harbour to the capital. The Wellington Fault runs along the western edge of the valley, following the straight line of the western hills, a reminder of the forces that shaped the landscape.
A Lower Hutt map poster shows a valley city in a single, clear frame. The river runs down the middle, the dense streets fill the flat ground, and the hills close in sharply on either side. Where the valley meets the water, the harbour shoreline adds a clean curve along the bottom of the composition.

Petone foreshore
