Macuba is in Rwanda's Western Province, in the highlands east of Lake Kivu. This is hill country. The land rises and falls in ridges and valleys, and most settlement follows the high ground and the slopes, where smallholdings and cultivated terraces cover the hills. Life here is closely tied to farming, and the landscape reflects centuries of careful use of steep, fertile ground.
On the map, the pattern is organic rather than planned. Roads and paths wind along ridgelines and bend around the contours of the hills. Clusters of houses sit along them, with fields in between. Valley floors show up as thin threads of streams, and the wider view reaches towards the lake basin in the west.
