Meerane lies in western Saxony near Zwickau, in hilly country close to the border with Thuringia. The town grew as a textile centre in the nineteenth century, and its map still shows that period. There's a compact historic centre around the market square, with rows of houses and former factory sites built out along the valley and hillsides.
The town's best-known street is the Steile Wand, a short, very steep cobbled climb from the centre. It's known well beyond Saxony because cycling races have used it as a punishing test. On the map it's only a short line, but anyone who knows it will look for it straight away.
