Mongu Map Poster
Mongu is the capital of Zambia's Western Province and sits on a low sandy ridge at the eastern edge of the Barotse floodplain. From above, the contrast is striking: on one side the town's roads and plots, on the other an immense flat plain that the upper Zambezi floods for several months each year, turning grassland into shallow open water.
A long canal cuts from the foot of the town out toward the river channels, giving Mongu its harbour and a link to boat traffic across the plain. The town itself is modest in scale, with a central grid around the market and administrative buildings, and looser residential areas spreading along the ridge to the north and south.
Mongu is closely tied to the Lozi people and the Kuomboka, the ceremony in which the Litunga travels by royal barge from Lealui on the plain to Limulunga on higher ground as the floods rise. Limulunga lies just north of the town. A Mongu map poster frames the settlement at exactly that meeting point of dry land and seasonal water.
