Montfermeil stands on a plateau in Seine-Saint-Denis, east of Paris. Victor Hugo set part of Les Misérables here, in the village where young Cosette lived with the Thénardiers and fetched water from the woods at night. More recently, Ladj Ly set his 2019 film of the same name in the town, giving it a second life on screen.
The map records several eras at once. The old village core keeps an irregular pattern of narrow streets around its church. Twentieth-century estates such as Les Bosquets appear as larger blocks with open ground between buildings.
