Nasu is a town in northern Tochigi Prefecture, stretching from the plains up toward the Nasu volcanic group. Its map is shaped by one broad slope. The land rises steadily to the northwest toward Mount Chausu, an active volcano, and roads climb the incline in long, near-parallel lines through forest, farmland and resort areas.
Nasu Kogen, the highland district, is dotted with hotels, villas, museums and farms connected by a loose network of roads rather than a dense centre. Higher up, the hot-spring village of Nasu-Yumoto sits on the main road toward the mountains and is one of the old onsen settlements of the region. The lower part of the town is more agricultural, with rice fields and dairy farms.
The area is closely associated with the Imperial Family, which keeps a summer villa at Nasu, and its cool climate has long made it a retreat from the heat of Tokyo.
