New London sits on the west bank of the Thames River where it opens into Long Island Sound. Its downtown is a compact grid rising from the waterfront, and the city's shape is set by the water on two sides: the river to the east and the Sound to the south, with Fort Trumbull on a point by the harbour.
In the nineteenth century New London was one of the leading whaling ports in the United States, and its maritime identity remains strong. The United States Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College both occupy campuses in the city's northern part, and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge carries Interstate 95 across the Thames to Groton.
