Nikumaroro Map Poster
Nikumaroro is a small atoll in the Phoenix Islands of Kiribati, far from any other inhabited land. On a map it is a narrow, elongated ring of coral islets enclosing a central lagoon, with a wide reef flat around the outside and passages where lagoon and ocean meet. For many years it was known as Gardner Island.
The atoll was settled in the late 1930s as part of the Phoenix Islands Settlement Scheme, and a small village was established there, but the colonists left in the early 1960s and it has been uninhabited since. On the reef lies the wreck of the SS Norwich City, a steamer that ran aground in 1929.
Nikumaroro is best known for a long-running hypothesis that Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan may have landed here after disappearing in 1937, a theory investigated by several expeditions but never confirmed.
