Oberkirch sits at the mouth of the Rench valley, where the Black Forest opens onto the Rhine plain. On a map, the river runs through the town. The old centre sits near its banks, and newer streets spread along the valley floor. The hillsides rise on both sides, so the road pattern thins quickly and gives way to terraces, forest tracks and scattered farms.
The slopes around Oberkirch are covered with vineyards and orchards, and the town is known locally for its wine and fruit brandies. Above the town are the ruins of Schauenburg castle, one of the most recognisable sights in the Renchtal. The valley itself continues deep into the Black Forest, following the river and the road towards the higher mountains.
