Pathein is a city of water and flat land. It stands on the Pathein River, one of the western branches of the Ayeyarwady delta, and the map shows streets stretched along the riverbank with jetties and wharves at the edge. Around the town, a network of creeks, canals and paddy fields spreads across terrain with almost no relief.
As the capital of Ayeyarwady Region, Pathein has long been an important trading port for delta rice, reachable by river from the sea. It is also famous across Myanmar for its hand-painted parasols, which are made in workshops in the town. The gilded Shwemokhtaw Pagoda rises in the city centre.
