Phetchaburi lies south-west of Bangkok, on the upper reaches of the Gulf of Thailand coast. The Phetchaburi River winds through town in tight bends, and the old centre sits along its banks, a dense area of streets, temples and shophouses laid out close to the water.
The town's best-known landmark is Phra Nakhon Khiri, a nineteenth-century royal palace built by King Mongkut on a hill just west of the centre. Locally called Khao Wang, it rises above the surrounding plain and appears on the map as a distinct green mound. Phetchaburi is also known across Thailand for its palm-sugar desserts.
