Qacha’s Nek is the capital of the district of the same name, in the south-east of Lesotho, close to the border crossing into South Africa's Eastern Cape. Like all of Lesotho it sits at high altitude, and its map is dominated by terrain: a compact town on sloping ground, roads that wind to follow the contours, and steep, lightly settled valleys in every direction.
The town takes its name from Qacha, a nineteenth-century chief, while nek is a word for a mountain pass or saddle, a fair description of its position on a route between highland Lesotho and the lowlands to the east. Houses and small plots spread out from the centre along roads and ridges rather than in a regular grid.
