Requena stands on the high plateau of inland Valencia, about seventy kilometres west of the city of Valencia. Its map has a clear centre of gravity: the old walled quarter known as La Villa, set on a rocky promontory above the valley of the river Magro. Its narrow streets bend around the slope in a tight, irregular knot, very different from the broader blocks that grew around it later.
Beneath La Villa lies a network of caves dug into the rock, used over centuries to store grain and wine and now open to visitors. Above ground, a medieval tower and stretches of old walls still mark the edge of the quarter. Below the old town, newer neighbourhoods spread across the flatter ground in straighter, more regular streets.
Requena gives its name to the Utiel-Requena wine region, known for the Bobal grape, and on a wider map the town sits inside a vast patchwork of vineyards.
