Salitre is in the far south of Ceará, near the state's border with Pernambuco, in the semi-arid backlands known as the sertão. The town is small and compact on the map. A short grid of streets runs around a central area, and roads lead away across a wide landscape of dry scrub, farm plots and seasonal watercourses.
Life here follows the rhythm of the sertão, with a long dry season, short rains and farming adapted to a hard climate. That shows on the map as open, lightly marked ground around the town.
