Sangamner lies in the Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra, on the Pravara River, and the river is the first thing you notice on the map. It curves past the town and sets the direction for the older streets, which bunch up near its banks before loosening into newer residential lanes and farmland. The name itself recalls a sangam, a meeting of waters.
The main road between Pune and Nashik runs through the town, and that long, confident line cuts across the more irregular local streets. Around it you can see the typical growth pattern of a Deccan market town: a dense older centre, commercial strips along the arterial roads and colonies laid out in small grids on the edges.
