Saumur lies on the Loire in the Maine-et-Loire department, where the Thouet flows into the larger river. From above, the town is organised by water. The wide Loire splits around islands, long stone bridges cross from bank to bank, and the old centre is packed onto the south bank below a limestone slope topped by the Château de Saumur.
The town is known for the Cadre Noir, the elite riders of the French national riding school, and for its long cavalry tradition. The soft tuffeau stone of the valley was quarried for centuries, leaving caves that now hold wine cellars, including those of the region's sparkling wines. On the map, the dense medieval lanes contrast with the straighter avenues of later districts.
