Shangyu lies in the north of Zhejiang province and is now a district of the city of Shaoxing. From above it shows the classic landscape of the Ningshao plain: flat, well-watered land laced with canals and small rivers, with low hills rising to the south. The main urban area combines a regular grid of wide modern roads with older, narrower lanes near the water.
The Cao'e River runs through the district and gives it its best-known story. The river is named after Cao E, a girl from the Eastern Han period who, according to tradition, drowned searching for her father's body and became a lasting symbol of filial devotion. A temple dedicated to her stands by the river.
To the north, reclaimed land stretches toward Hangzhou Bay, creating large rectangular industrial and agricultural plots. A Shangyu map poster brings together the curve of the river, the fine mesh of canals and the planned blocks of the newer districts, producing a detailed and orderly composition.
