The town's streets gather around its railway station and main road, with markets and houses forming a compact core that quickly gives way to paddy fields, bamboo groves and village clusters.
Water defines this landscape. Rivers coming down from the hills to the north spread into braided channels across the plain on their way to the Brahmaputra, and seasonal flooding is part of life in the district.
