Simen lies in the upland country of southeastern Gansu, a landscape shaped by loess, the fine wind-blown soil that covers much of this part of China. On a map, the terrain shows itself through the roads rather than through contour lines: streets gather where the ground levels out, and routes out of town bend to follow gullies and stream beds instead of running straight.
The town itself is small and fairly compact, with its denser streets forming a core from which lanes spread towards surrounding villages. Beyond that, the map thins into scattered hamlets and winding tracks across the hills. This mix of a tight centre and a branching, organic network is typical of settlements in the Wei River basin region, where valleys have long set the pattern for where people live.
