South Hayling is the main settlement on the southern half of Hayling Island, off the Hampshire coast between Portsmouth and Chichester. It is one of the more distinctive coastlines in southern England. A long, nearly straight beach runs along the south, and the tidal waters of Langstone Harbour and Chichester Harbour wrap around the island to the west and east.
The streets reflect a seaside resort that grew into a residential town. Roads run parallel to the shore behind the beach, and quieter residential streets and closes spread inland. Hayling Island is often named as a birthplace of windsurfing, and its beach and harbour mouths remain popular for sailing and board sports.
