Suibara is a former town in Niigata Prefecture that merged with its neighbours in 2004 to form the city of Agano. It lies on the Echigo Plain, one of Japan's great rice-growing areas, and from above the surrounding land is divided into a precise grid of paddies, irrigation channels and farm roads. The older town centre sits among them as a denser cluster of streets near the railway.
The best-known feature is Hyōko, a shallow lake on the edge of town where large numbers of swans spend the winter after migrating from Siberia. The lake is protected as a wetland of international importance, and on the map it appears as a clear, simple shape of open water set against the fine texture of the fields and houses around it.
