Swabi lies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the wide, fertile plain between the Indus and Kabul rivers. The land is flat and heavily farmed, crossed by irrigation canals and dotted with villages. On the map, the town sits in the middle of this pattern. Its dense centre fades into fields and scattered settlements on every side.
The district is known beyond the region for two things. Tarbela Dam, one of the largest earth-filled dams in the world, lies close to its northeastern edge on the Indus. In Topi, within the district, is the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute, one of Pakistan's leading engineering universities.
