Tangla is a town in Udalguri district, on the northern side of the Brahmaputra valley in Assam, not far from the foothills that rise toward Bhutan. The land here is flat and green. On the map the town is a modest cluster of streets along a main road and railway, surrounded by paddy fields, villages and large, neatly bounded tea gardens.
Tea is central to life in this part of Assam, and the estates in the district appear on the map as large rectangles with their own internal roads and settlements. Small rivers and streams run south from the hills toward the Brahmaputra, crossing the plain in shallow channels that can shift their course with the monsoon.
