Tauá is in the Inhamuns region of western Ceará, in the semi-arid interior of northeastern Brazil. From above, the town is small and clearly bounded. A central cluster of streets and squares gives way quickly to open land, where roads head off across the country toward neighbouring municipalities and scattered rural settlements.
The landscape shapes the map as much as the town does. Seasonal streams, most of them dry for part of the year, show up as thin lines winding across the surrounding land. Small reservoirs, which matter a great deal in a dry region, appear as irregular water shapes. The streets are mostly low-rise blocks spread across gently rolling ground.
