Tielt is a market town in the province of West Flanders, between Bruges and Ghent. Like many Flemish towns it grew around a central market square, and its street plan still shows it. Main roads arrive from the surrounding villages and meet at the Markt, where the old cloth hall tower stands. From above the historic core is small and dense, surrounded by later residential districts.
Around the town the landscape is typical of inland West Flanders: level farmland divided into small irregular fields, scattered farmsteads and a dense network of narrow country roads. On a map this creates a fine, intricate texture around the centre. There is no major river or coastline here, so the shape of Tielt comes entirely from its roads and the pull of the market square.
