Uetersen lies in the Pinneberg district of Schleswig-Holstein, north-west of Hamburg, on the Pinnau, a small river that flows on to the Elbe. The town grew up around a Cistercian convent founded in the thirteenth century. On the map, the older streets still gather around that early core before spreading out into the residential quarters that surround it.
Uetersen is known as the Rosenstadt, the town of roses, because of its Rosarium. Laid out in a park near the centre in the first half of the twentieth century, it is one of the oldest public rose gardens in Germany. The Pinnau once carried trade to the town's small harbour and linked it with the Elbe and the marshland farms of the region.
