Uruçuca sits in the cacao-growing region of southern Bahia, where plantations have long been cultivated under the shade of native forest. The town occupies uneven ground. Its streets follow the slopes and valley floors instead of a planned grid, so the centre appears on a map as a cluster of bending lanes with roads leaving it along the hills.
The municipality reaches all the way east to the coast, where the district of Serra Grande looks out over the Atlantic between Itacaré and Ilhéus. Between the town and the sea, the map is mostly open land, crossed by a few roads and streams that run through the Atlantic Forest and the cacao groves.
