Vincennes borders the eastern edge of Paris, just beyond the Périphérique, and on a map it reads almost as an extension of the capital. Its streets are tightly built, mostly with nineteenth- and early twentieth-century apartment blocks along straight avenues, and the town itself has little open space. Between town and forest stands the Château de Vincennes, a royal fortress whose fourteenth-century keep is often called the tallest in Europe.
