Warendorf lies on the River Ems in the flat, green Münsterland of North Rhine-Westphalia. On a map the river runs along the southern edge of the old town, and the historic centre forms a small, dense oval of streets around the market square, surrounded by a ring of promenades that follows the line of the former town walls.
Outside that core, residential districts spread out across level ground, and beyond them the landscape opens into fields, hedgerows and scattered farmsteads, the characteristic pattern of the Münsterland. Straight country roads link the town to neighbouring villages across the plain.
Warendorf is closely associated with horses. It is home to the North Rhine-Westphalian State Stud and to Germany's national equestrian centre, where riders train for international competition.
