This Yantai is a town in the east of Chongqing Municipality, far inland and quite different from the better-known coastal city of the same name in Shandong. It lies in the ridge-and-valley country of the eastern Sichuan Basin, where long, parallel mountain ranges run from northeast to southwest and farmland fills the broad troughs between them.
From above, the town is a compact knot of streets, with the main roads following the grain of the landscape and smaller lanes branching toward the slopes.
