Yazd lies on the high plateau of central Iran, between the Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut deserts, and its map shows a city designed for heat. The historic core is a dense, irregular maze of narrow covered lanes, courtyard houses and small squares. Around it, the modern city spreads in straighter streets and larger blocks, and beyond that the built area ends abruptly against dry, open ground.
The historic city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017 for its earthen architecture. Its skyline is marked by badgirs, the tall windcatchers that funnel cool air into houses, and by the high twin minarets of the Jameh Mosque. Yazd is also one of the main centres of Iran's Zoroastrian community, with a fire temple that keeps a flame said to have burned for centuries.
