Yinggen lies in the highlands of central Hainan, far from the beaches most people associate with the island. It is the seat of Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County, an area where the Li and Miao peoples have long lived among steep, forested hills. From above, the town fills a stretch of lower ground, and the terrain around it is left largely unbuilt.
The map shows a compact built-up area shaped by watercourses and a few main roads that lead out through the hills toward other parts of the island. Beyond the edge of town, lines become sparse and give way to farmland, forest and mountain slopes. Yinggen is the opposite of the dense coastal cities, and that contrast is part of its appeal.
