Argentan lies in the Orne department of Normandy, on the upper course of the Orne river, in the open farmland known as the Argentan plain. From above, the town has a compact historic core of short, irregular streets, surrounded by later residential districts, with main roads leading north toward Caen and south toward Alençon.
The church of Saint-Germain rises in the old centre, and the town is known for Point d'Argentan, a needle lace made here since the seventeenth century and still practised by the Benedictine nuns of the local abbey. In August 1944 Argentan stood at the southern jaw of the Falaise Pocket, and much of the centre had to be rebuilt after the fighting.
