Three canals meet at this junction beside the river. The meeting point forms a small knot of water lines that is easy to find on the poster.

Ashton-under-Lyne Map Poster & Print
Ashton-under-Lyne lies on the north bank of the River Tame, in the Tameside borough of Greater Manchester. From above, the old market town centre forms a dense core of streets. Around it are terraced rows from the cotton era, and water runs along the southern edge. The river and the canals give the map several strong horizontal lines.
Ashton grew with the textile industry, and the canals made it an important junction. At Portland Basin, the Ashton Canal, the Peak Forest Canal and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal meet, and the restored warehouse there now houses a museum. The town is also the eastern terminus of the Metrolink tram line from Manchester.
An Ashton-under-Lyne map poster shows the layers of an industrial town. The market streets gather in the middle, terraced rows spread out in tight parallel lines, and the waterways cut across the south. Few towns show their canal history as clearly on a map, and the print makes it easy to trace.

Market town core
The historic centre around the market square has dense, irregular streets. It is the darkest part of the map and the centre of the composition.
Terraced rows
Streets of nineteenth-century terraced houses spread out in tight parallel lines. Their repetition gives the print a fine, graphic texture.
