Balzar lies in the north of Guayas province, in the flat, fertile lowlands that stretch inland from the Ecuadorian coast toward the foothills of the Andes. The town is a local centre for the surrounding countryside, and its map reflects a place that grew around trade, farming and the roads linking it to Guayaquil and the provinces further north.
From above, the urban area forms a fairly regular grid of blocks, with a central square and the main streets running parallel to each other. The town sits beside the river, which curves along one side and marks a clear natural boundary between the built-up area and the open land beyond.
