Bānsdīh lies in Ballia District, in the far east of Uttar Pradesh, on the broad, flat plain between the Ganges and the Ghaghara. On the map it appears as a compact cluster of streets and lanes around a central market area. Roads run outward from there toward surrounding villages and toward the district town of Ballia to the south.
The land around the town is low-lying and intensively farmed, dotted with ponds and crossed by irrigation channels. Rural roads run in long lines between the fields, while the rivers nearby change their courses with the seasonal floods. From above, the pattern is one of scattered villages linked by thin roads across an open, well-watered plain.
Ballia District also contains Surha Tal, a large natural lake protected as a bird sanctuary, where migratory birds gather in winter.
