Bārān lies in the Hadoti region of southeastern Rajasthan, a greener and flatter part of the state than the desert to the west. From above, the town has a dense, irregular centre of lanes and markets, with main roads leading out towards Kota and the surrounding district. Beyond the built-up area the land opens into wide, evenly farmed fields.
The town is the headquarters of Baran district, created in 1991 when it was separated from Kota. It serves as a trading centre for the agricultural land around it. Tanks and small waterbodies appear in and near the town, and they break up the street pattern with smooth, rounded shapes.
