Baturaden lies on the southern flank of Mount Slamet in Central Java, the second-highest volcano on the island. On a map the land tilts visibly: roads rise from the plain around Purwokerto in long, winding lines, and the settled area becomes looser and more scattered as it climbs toward the forest on the upper slopes.
The area has long been a highland retreat, known for its cooler air, waterfalls and hot springs fed by the volcano. A botanical garden sits on the slopes above the town, and the forests beyond it stretch toward the peak. Below, villages and fields fill the gentler ground, linked by roads that thread between the ravines cut by mountain streams.
