Derwent and the weir
The river curves through the town and widens above the Horseshoe Weir, built to power the mills, forming one of the most recognisable water shapes on the map.

Belper Map Poster & Print
Belper lies in the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire, a few miles north of Derby. The town follows the river closely: the main road runs along the valley, the mills stand at the water's edge, and rows of terraced houses climb the slopes on either side. To the west the land rises toward the Chevin, the ridge that frames the town.
Belper grew rapidly after Jedediah Strutt began building cotton mills here in the 1770s, harnessing the power of the Derwent. The Strutt family also built housing for their workers, and several of these streets survive largely intact. The town is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2001 as one of the birthplaces of the modern factory system.
A Belper map poster makes the relationship between river and town unusually clear: the curving Derwent, the broad millpond above the Horseshoe Weir, the bridge, and the rows of workers' streets on the hillside. It is a small town, but its plan tells a large story about how industry reshaped the English countryside.
