Berdyansk lies on the northern shore of the Sea of Azov, where the Berda River reaches the coast. The most striking shape on its map is the Berdyansk Spit, a narrow tongue of sand that curves south-west into the sea for many kilometres. Lagoons and shallow water line it on both sides.
The town was founded in the 1820s as a grain port. Its older streets form a regular grid rising from the harbour up the slope behind it. The port breakwaters and quays fill the waterfront. Resort areas, sanatoriums and beaches continue along the shore towards the base of the spit.
