Grand River bends
The river makes broad loops through the city. The land inside each loop is held as parkland and trails, which gives the map several soft open curves.

Brantford Map Poster & Print
The Grand River defines Brantford's layout. It enters from the north, swings in wide bends past the downtown and continues southeast. The older core sits on high ground beside one of these bends, and neighbourhoods spread outward on both banks, joined by a small number of bridges. Highway 403 crosses the northern part of the city as a long, clean curve.
Brantford is widely known as the Telephone City. Alexander Graham Bell's family homestead is on the edge of town, and it was here that he worked out the idea of the telephone in 1874. The city is also Wayne Gretzky's hometown, and a street and a sports centre carry his name. The Six Nations of the Grand River territory lies just to the southeast.
A Brantford map poster shows a city shaped around a river more than around a plan. Streets change direction wherever the valley bends, and the floodplain parks and trails along the water appear as wide empty ribbons. Across the river, the western and southern districts have their own grids, set at different angles.

Downtown on the bluff
The historic core sits on raised ground beside the river. Its compact grid ends abruptly at the edge of the valley.
Highway 403
The highway sweeps across the northern neighbourhoods in one long arc, the most mechanical line on a map otherwise shaped by water.
