Brookings Map Poster & Print
Brookings lies in eastern South Dakota, in the flat, open prairie close to the Minnesota border. Like many towns on the northern plains, it is organised around a clear grid of streets aligned with the compass, with a compact downtown and residential blocks spreading evenly around it. Interstate 29 runs along the west side of town, marking a strong vertical line on the map.
The defining feature of Brookings is South Dakota State University, the largest university in the state. Its campus occupies a substantial area north of downtown, with curving paths, open green spaces and large buildings that break the regular pattern of the surrounding streets. McCrory Gardens, the university's botanical garden, adds another area of gentle, looping paths.
East of town, the Big Sioux River winds through the countryside, its meandering course contrasting with the straight roads laid out across the fields. A Brookings map poster shows the grid, the campus and the prairie together, a clear picture of a college town set in the agricultural landscape of the Upper Midwest.

Prairie street grid
Streets follow a regular north-south and east-west grid, typical of plains towns, giving the map a calm, orderly structure.
Big Sioux River
To the east, the river meanders through the farmland, adding a winding natural line to the otherwise straight landscape.
