Chamba lies in the west of Himachal Pradesh, on the right bank of the Ravi river, at the mouth of a steep Himalayan valley. The town is built on terraces above the water. From above, its streets climb in switchbacks and terraces, packed between the river below and the mountainsides above, which gives the map an unusual vertical layering.
At the centre is the Chaugan, a long open meadow used for public gatherings and the annual Minjar fair. Chamba was the capital of a princely state founded more than a thousand years ago, and the stone temples of the Lakshmi Narayan complex date from that long history. The town is also known for Chamba rumal embroidery and its miniature painting tradition.
