Changdao lies in the southeast of Gansu, a province better known for the deserts further west. Here the landscape is different: tight valleys, steep slopes and farmland worked wherever the ground allows. From above, the town appears as a strip of settlement laid along a valley floor, where flat land is scarce and every road competes with the watercourse for space.
The street network is shaped by that constraint. A main road follows the valley, with shorter streets branching off before the slopes rise too sharply to build on. Around the town, the map turns into a pattern of field edges, village clusters and winding tracks climbing toward the ridges, a rural geography typical of this corner of northwest China.

Beyond the edge of town, paths and farm roads climb the surrounding hillsides, and the map fills with fine, irregular lines where cultivated land meets the mountains of southeastern Gansu.
