Changji lies in northern Xinjiang, directly west of Ürümqi, where the northern slopes of the Tianshan meet the flat land of the Junggar Basin. On the map, the city is a large, regular grid of wide avenues and big blocks. Its layout is typical of cities that grew quickly in western China during recent decades.
The boundary with Ürümqi is barely visible, since the two cities have grown into each other along the main roads running east and west. To the south, the ground rises toward the mountains. To the north, the streets give way to farmland and the plain stretches off toward the desert. Changji is the seat of the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture.
