Open-pit edge
A giant mine pit sits right beside the historic town. On the map it appears as a large void with streets pressed against its rim.

Chaupimarca Map Poster & Print
Chaupimarca is the historic core of Cerro de Pasco, the capital of Peru's Pasco region. At more than 4,300 meters above sea level, it is among the highest urban areas in the world. On a map, its most striking feature is not a square or a river but a vast open-pit mine that has consumed a large part of the old town.
The streets of Chaupimarca curve around the edge of the pit. Some end abruptly where the excavation begins, and the town's layout clearly shows the pressure of more than a century of mining. Around it, the high puna landscape is open and treeless, dotted with lakes, waste deposits and other workings that appear as irregular shapes on detailed maps.
A Chaupimarca map poster is a frank, powerful image of a place shaped by mining. The dense, uneven streets contrast with the huge empty void of the pit, and the map shows the relationship between town and mine more directly than any description. For people from Cerro de Pasco, it is a portrait of home that is honest about how it has changed.

Irregular old streets
Chaupimarca's lanes bend and break around the mine and the hilly ground. The resulting pattern is dense, uneven and unlike a planned grid.
High puna setting
The town lies on the open, treeless high plateau of central Peru. Small lakes and mining sites dot the surrounding landscape.
